On Saturday, November 1st the NYCWP kicked off our membership events with this year’s first Writing Marathon. A small group of teacher-consultants, teachers and one student gathered at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue for a walking, writing “tour” of Harlem, one of New York’s best known and uniquely identified neighborhoods. We started off on the steps of the brownstone that was home to Langston Hughes for the last 20 years of his life in this city. From there we stopped at the National Black Theater, down Fifth Avenue to Marcus Garvey Park, with a stop at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building and in front of the Apollo Theater, before walking away from the bustle and noise of 125th Street. We crossed through St. Nicholas Park to the hall of education at CCNY, a fitting place for a group of writing teachers to end. Hopefully, Joe and Cecilia – two of the writers who brought their cameras with them– will post some of their pictures here and other participants will share a line or two from the day writing. Look for announcements of future Writing Marathons – we’re thinking the Cloisters next. We hope to see more of you at our next meeting. |
